Regaining Confidence and Independence – Margaret’s Story at Woodlands

Margaret is a retired Home Economics teacher who moved into Woodlands Care Home in Aberdeen two years ago. Following a fall at home and a period of illness with pneumonia, Margaret lost a great deal of confidence, which had a significant impact on her mobility and independence.
For someone who had always been self-sufficient, this was a difficult adjustment. Her love for cooking and baking, something that had been a big part of her life, had to take a step back as she was no longer able to move around as freely as before.
Despite these challenges, Margaret remained determined to regain her independence and return to doing the things she enjoys most.
Building Strength and Confidence
With support from the team at Woodlands Care Home, Margaret began working closely with the Personal Trainer, who developed a tailored fitness plan to help rebuild her strength and mobility.
Through consistent effort and determination, Margaret has made excellent progress and is now able to move around short distances using a walking aid. Her commitment to improving her physical health is clear, regularly attending the morning motivator sessions and taking part in an impressive 29 fitness and activity classes during the Winter Olympics period.

Recognising how important cooking is to Margaret, the team made thoughtful adaptations within the home. A kitchenette was equipped with an oven and hob, enabling her to take part in cooking in a safe and supported environment with a carer by her side, helping her reconnect with a lifelong passion.
Returning to What She Loves
Margaret is now once again enjoying the activities that mean the most to her. She is often one of the first to attend baking and cooking sessions, where she not only takes part but also supports other residents in preparing their dishes.
Her confidence continues to grow, and she is now preparing a lesson plan to begin teaching Home Economics sessions within the home. These sessions will involve visiting children and grandchildren, creating meaningful opportunities to share her knowledge and bring generations together.
Margaret is also looking forward to supporting a young mothers group, where she hopes to teach simple, nutritious meals, continuing her passion for helping others through food and education.

A Positive and Inspiring Journey
Margaret’s journey is a great example of how the right support, encouragement and environment can help rebuild confidence and independence. Through a person-centred approach, she has been able to regain her mobility, return to her interests and look ahead to new opportunities.
Her determination and willingness to get involved continue to inspire both residents and staff within the home.
