VE Day Celebrated in Style at Woodlands

At Woodlands Care Home, we marked Victory in Europe (VE) Day with a truly special and heartfelt celebration, bringing together generations to remember, reflect and rejoice.

The day commemorated the official end of World War II in Europe, a historic moment that changed the course of the world. For our residents, many of whom lived through those turbulent times, VE Day is more than just a date on the calendar; it’s a reminder of courage, resilience and the bittersweet relief that came with peace.

This year’s event was one to remember. In a touching display of camaraderie and respect, we were joined by the Officer Cadets from Aberdeen UOTC, along with Captain Cotton, WO Williamson and CSgt Barr. Their presence not only brought a ceremonial flair to the day but also allowed for a rare and meaningful exchange of stories and experiences. Special thanks must go to Catherine Robertson Ross MBE, whose organisation helped create a truly intergenerational event, part celebration, part living history lesson.

In true military tradition, a bottle of fine Malt Whisky was opened. With glasses raised, everyone joined in a heartfelt toast to those who served, those who never returned and to our King. It was a moment filled with emotion, respect and unity.

The atmosphere quickly lifted into celebration mode, with 1940s music filling the air, inspiring some impressive dancing and singalongs. A delicious buffet kept energy levels high and entertainer Bob Wilson led a rousing session of classic tunes from the era, which had toes tapping and voices raised in nostalgic harmony.

One highlight that sparked particular interest was a personal story shared by resident Mac, who recalled boarding Hitler’s yacht while it was docked in Rosyth after the war. In a moment of youthful bravado, he took a piece of wood from the vessel as a keepsake. For years, it lived quietly in his sock drawer, until one fateful day, during a tidy-up, his mum unknowingly threw it out, dismissing it as “an old bit of wood.” His tale had us all laughing and shaking our heads at the quirks of history and memory.

Beyond the festivities, the day carried a deeper purpose. VE Day celebrations like this one are vital in bridging generations, offering young people a living connection to the past. For our residents, it’s a chance to share their memories and feel seen, heard and valued. For our visitors, it’s an education that no textbook could replicate.

At Woodlands, we believe in the power of community and storytelling. VE Day allowed us to pause, honour, learn and above all, to celebrate the incredible lives that continue to inspire us every day.

Here’s to the heroes, the stories and the spirit that lives on.
